tv shows of the 90’s

The 90’s seem like they were just yesterday. When it comes to television the 90’s sitcoms were unforgettable for all of us who were alive. Firstly, they included things called “actors” and they used “scripts.” TV has been changing drastically since the new millennium and instead of great television sitcoms to now have to watch some idiots on TV who get paid to act like they are acting. What has happened to the world of television? Especially since the release of High Definition TV, entertainment has changed to the point of no return. The cool era is gone. Luckily for us we can still watch tv online and pretend we’re still in the 90’s. Either way, we should always remember the stars. Here are three great 90’s sitcoms that will never be forgotten.

The Simpsons aired in 1989 and believe it or not, in 2009 it is still airing. Not just reruns, the Simpsons’ creators Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, and Sam Simon have decided to keep on dishing out new episodes after the release of Simpsons the Movie in 2007. Why is this show so loved? It has been cherished by teens and adults alike as a show that is intelligent, hilarious, and in all reality extremely insightful. A strong point of the show is it’s literary references and tie to historical and cultural events. Not only that, but it is a cartoon as well. The characters have become our friends whether it be Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, or Maggie, either way the Simpsons have and always will rule the world of television.

Friends was an NBC weekly comedy that aired from 1994 to 2004. It was created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman and it was about six buddies in the city of New York who stick together through thick and thin. The reason why it was so loved is not only are all the friends super funny and cool, but they are all hot, they sometimes sleep with each other, and they are always drinking coffee and complaining about their jobs. There was also a story of romance with Rachel and Ross which kept us on our twos since episode one. Thank god for reruns, this show was so successful and incredibly funny that they still play re-runs of it today. Not to mention, these friends are so authentic, that there will never be a movie that ruins the magic of this 90’s sitcom.

Seinfeld was a comedy created by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David which aired from 1990 to 1998. This sitcom was about four buddies in their 30’s and 40’s in New York City. Before friends there was no other show about New York City in the 90’s, so this show was popular based on this fact alone. However, this show was very comedic and will continue to remain funny forever. The characters are often dismissive of other people for no apparent reason and they always seem to get themselves into every day situations that seem far more interesting then in real life. The magic of the show was in the way it related to the typical U.S. citizen and stayed relevant to the times. Of course like the others, Seinfeld is still re-running today.

As you know, there are plenty of other great 90’s sitcoms that we will never forget. There is Sex and the City, which was later released as a movie, there was Dawson’s Creek, and let’s not forget Mad About You. The Simpsons, Friends, and Seinfeld however, had the longest run, captured the most viewers, and will go down in history for their memorable characters, their relevance to the real world, and their ability to crack us up even today. These sitcoms will undoubtedly go down in history as the best primetime television shows of the 90’s and beyond.
